Betting Against the Buildout: Inverse ETFs Jump as CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) Credit Fears Hit AI Stocks

On Friday the cheapest-looking asset in artificial intelligence was not a share but a bond. CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), the Nvidia-backed cloud provider, saw its debt trade at yields of around 15%, a level normally associated with distress, while credit default swaps priced a real chance of default. Its shares fell about 12% on the day and about 25% on the week. The T-REX 2X Inverse CRWV Daily Target ETF (Cboe: CORD), which bets against the stock at twice the daily rate, rose about 24%. A tale of two screens, and one balance sheet.
Why a bond matters
CoreWeave carries roughly $50bn or more in debt and lease obligations, taken on to buy chips and build data centres at speed. Such a firm is financed like a utility but valued like a software company, which works for as long as money is cheap and customers keep signing. On Friday neither condition looked secure. A hotter-than-expected reading of September inflation revived fears of further rate rises, and every point on the discount rate shortens the fuse on a debt-funded buildout. A report from Gartner added fuel, flagging possible impairment of trillions of dollars of AI infrastructure spending and warning that most so-called neocloud operators may not survive on their own.
The defenders did not stay silent. Some analysts, and Nvidia’s (NASDAQ: NVDA) chief executive, Jensen Huang, spoke up for CoreWeave. But markets in a credit scare listen to yields, not speeches.
The contagion
The sell-off spread along the supply chain. Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS) lost about 12%, to the mid-$160s. Its capital spending far exceeds its operating cash flow, and it leans on multi-billion-dollar financing and on customer prepayments and deals such as the one with Meta. The Tradr 2X Short NBIS Daily ETF (Cboe: NBIZ) gained about 25%. Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) dropped about 11.5% to the low $18s, with substantial debt against its cash and no adjusted profit, and its inverse fund, the Tradr 2X Short APLD Daily ETF (Cboe: APLZ), rose about 23%. IREN (NASDAQ: IREN), a Bitcoin miner turned AI cloud provider, fell sharply, and the Tradr 2X Short IREN Daily ETF (Cboe: IREZ) gained about 22%.
Optics and chips followed. AXT (NASDAQ: AXTI), which makes the substrates used in optical parts for data centres, fell 11% to the low $50s after a huge run this year, and the Tradr 2X Short AXTI Daily ETF (Cboe: AXTQ) gained 22%. Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ: AAOI) lost nearly 10% and over 20% on the week, after a warning from the chief executive of Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) that access to capital could constrain AI spending; its inverse fund, the Tradr 2X Short AAOI Daily ETF (Cboe: AAOZ), rose about 19%. Cerebras Systems (NASDAQ: CBRS), exposed to the risk of depending on OpenAI, saw the Tradr 2X Short CBRS Daily ETF (Cboe: CBRZ) gain about 21%. Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) sold off in sympathy, lifting the Defiance Daily Target 2X Short SMCI ETF (Nasdaq: SMCZ) by about 20%. Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), the Bitcoin treasury company, fell 9% to 10% as crypto weakened, and the T-Rex 2X Inverse MSTR Daily Target ETF (Cboe: MSTZ) rose about 19%.
The arithmetic of leverage
The ETF gains are no mystery. A 2x inverse fund aims to deliver twice the opposite of a stock’s daily move, so a 12% fall in CoreWeave should yield a gain of about 24%, which is roughly what CORD managed. The trouble comes with time. These funds reset every day, and compounding does the rest. Suppose a stock falls 12% on one day and rises 12% the next. It ends the two days down about 1.4%. A 2x inverse fund rises 24% and then falls 24%, and ends down about 5.8%. The stock nearly broke even, and the fund lost almost six percent of its value. That is the decay the issuers warn about, and it is why such products are meant for traders thinking in hours, not for investors thinking in quarters.
Demand versus finance
The most interesting feature of the day is what did not happen. Nobody argued that demand for AI had collapsed. AXT had recently beaten forecasts for revenue and earnings, and Applied Optoelectronics has grown its sales of 800G products strongly. The complaint was about financing: who pays for the capacity, at what rate, and what happens if the customers are late. A sector can be right about the future and wrong about the funding, and in the history of capital-hungry booms the second error has often been the one that bites.
That suggests a modest conclusion. Friday was not a verdict on the technology. It was a repricing of debt-funded ambition, set off by a bond market that was less patient than the equity market. Whether the move deepens depends on two things the equity crowd cannot control: the next inflation number, and the willingness of lenders to roll over the neoclouds.
Three cautions
First, the figures are approximate and drawn from reports of the session. Second, one day is not a trend, and a rebound would hurt the inverse funds twice, through the stock and through compounding. Third, nothing here is investment advice, and leveraged inverse funds can lose most of their value quickly.
Leverage is a way of making a view loud. On Friday the view was loud and, for one day, correct.
