Why Are PowerBank (NASDAQ:PBK), Ascend Wellness (CSE:AAWH.U) and Tiernan Gold (TSXV:TNGD) Down More Than 10%?
Five Canadian-listed small caps fell more than 10% on Monday even as the S&P/TSX Composite edged up 0.04% and gold rose. PowerBank (NASDAQ:PBK) slid 21% amid a Nasdaq bid-price warning, Ascend Wellness (CSE:AAWH.U) gave back 17%, and Apex Critical Metals (CSE:APXC) dropped despite strong drill results. No clear company news was found for Tiernan Gold (TSXV:TNGD) or CVW Sustainable Royalties (TSXV:CVW).
Five Canadian-listed small-cap stocks fell more than 10% on Monday, led by PowerBank Corporation (NASDAQ:PBK), which dropped 20.93% to C$0.34, while the S&P/TSX Composite edged up 0.04% and gold futures rose.
The declines were not part of a broad selloff. Decliners outnumbered advancers on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 525 to 457, but the benchmark finished higher, and resource prices were firm. The drops were stock-specific, and for most of these companies, no Monday announcement could be identified. The explanations below are context rather than confirmed causes.
PowerBank (NASDAQ:PBK): Listing Pressure and a Shrinking Market Value
PowerBank, a Toronto-based solar and energy storage developer that also trades on Cboe Canada, has the clearest overhang on the list. Last week, the company said Nasdaq had granted it an additional 180-day period to regain compliance with the exchange’s minimum bid price requirement. The U.S. shares were trading at about US$0.27 at the time, far below the US$1 threshold, and the stock fell about 4.75% on the day of that announcement.
The company has also been active on its balance sheet. It terminated an at-the-market equity offering program on September 30 and reported fiscal year results on September 29 that showed narrower losses and better margins as it shifts toward owning clean energy assets. Even so, the shares were down about 34% over the month ending October 1, and the market value was near US$17 million, against a 52-week high of US$2.35. Companies that fall this far often face continued selling from holders worried about dilution or a delisting, though PowerBank has not announced either on Monday.
Apex Critical Metals (CSE:APXC): Strong Drill Results, Weak Reaction
Apex Critical Metals Corp. (CSE:APXC) fell 10.32% to C$1.39 on a day when it released some of its best news of the year. The company reported western step-out drilling at its Rift Rare Earth Project in Nebraska that extended the Trinity Zone about 200 metres. Highlights included 3.55% rare earth oxide over 116.0 metres and 2.35% over 171.5 metres, along with the longest intervals above 4% on the project to date.
Apex has completed about 37 holes totalling 24,000 metres, with results from roughly 8,000 metres pending, and it targets a first resource estimate by the end of the first quarter of 2027. A decline on good news can reflect profit-taking after a strong run, and investors may also be weighing financing risk. Apex raised C$15 million through a brokered offering earlier this year and filed a final base shelf prospectus in August, which gives it flexibility to sell more shares. That reading is an inference, not a statement from the company.
Ascend Wellness (CSE:AAWH.U): Cannabis Rally Fades
Ascend Wellness Holdings, Inc. (CSE:AAWH.U) lost 17.46% to US$0.52. The U.S. cannabis operator has been volatile, with a 52-week range of US$0.34 to US$1.20 and a low set on August 6. The Monday decline implies a prior close near US$0.63, well above the low US$0.40s seen during the summer, so some of the move may be a giveback after a rebound.
The company’s fundamentals have been improving. Second-quarter net revenue rose 7.9% from the first quarter to US$126.1 million, adjusted EBITDA reached US$29.1 million and the retail footprint grew to 55 locations. Shareholders also approved a reverse stock split on August 28, at a ratio of between 1-for-10 and 1-for-50, as a step toward a possible listing on a major U.S. exchange. The board decides whether and when to proceed, and cannabis shares have been sensitive to news about the possible move of medical cannabis to Schedule III.
CVW Royalties (TSXV:CVW) and Tiernan Gold (TSXV:TNGD): No News, Thin Trading
CVW Sustainable Royalties Inc. (TSXV:CVW) fell 12.94% to C$0.74. Its most recent release, on September 21, said it had funded a second US$1.5 million investment under a royalty agreement with Relocalize, completing US$4.0 million of up-front capital. One market summary last week described the stock as trading below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages on low volume with no news, a pattern in which a few sellers can move the price sharply.
Tiernan Gold Corp. (TSXV:TNGD) fell 12.29% to C$6.78. The company is developing the Volcan Gold Project in Chile’s Maricunga belt, which hosts a measured and indicated resource of 9.8 million ounces, and has been listed only since December 2025. Its latest news was a small grant of deferred share units to directors on October 2, priced at C$6.66. Because gold rose on Monday, the drop does not appear to reflect the metal, and no company-specific trigger was found.
What to Watch Next
For PowerBank, the key questions are whether it can lift its share price above US$1 within the compliance period, through a reverse split or otherwise, and whether it needs new financing. Apex investors will watch the pending assays and any equity raise. Ascend’s next steps on its reverse split and uplisting will matter, while CVW and Tiernan need fresh news to change the trend.
Small-cap moves of 10% or more can occur on little volume and may reverse quickly. Investors should check the listing they trade, since several of these companies are quoted on more than one exchange and in more than one currency.
